Safeguarding fitness at sea

Safe, reliable and compliant medicals for all seafarers

Anyone working at sea must undergo periodic medical assessment. OmniHealth carries out these examinations according to the official requirements of the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) and the ILO/IMO Guidelines for the Medical Examination of Seafarers.

A seafarer medical determines whether you are medically fit to work safely at sea — not only for your own wellbeing, but also for the safety of your colleagues, passengers, and everyone on board.

Efficient and fully certified maritime medicals in Amsterdam

At OmniHealth you can schedule your medical quickly, usually within a few days. Our ILT-appointed maritime doctors perform the medical according to all statutory requirements, and you receive your Geneeskundige Verklaring Zeevaart (Medical Certificate for Seafarers) immediately after the examination.

The certificate is valid for two years (or one year if you are under 18).
All requirements are laid down in the Keuringsreglement voor de Zeevaart.

for whom

Who needs a seafarer medical?

All crew members working on vessels that transport goods or passengers are legally required to hold a valid medical certificate. The examination must be performed by a doctor appointed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
All maritime doctors at OmniHealth are fully authorised to perform and sign your certificate.

Students preparing for internships at sea are not legally required to undergo a medical — but practically, they cannot go on board without one. We perform these assessments quickly and correctly.

ENG1 equivalence explained (important for international crew)

Many seafarers working for British or international companies ask whether the Dutch seafarer medical certificate is equivalent to the ENG1.

Yes — it is equivalent.
The Dutch medical is based on the same international standards as the ENG1:
the ILO/IMO Guidelines on the Medical Examination of Seafarers (MLC/STCW framework).
For most employers and flag states, the Dutch certificate is accepted in the same way as an ENG1.
Where required, we can provide additional documentation.

Cruise lines & PEME medicals

Cruise companies often require a PEME (Pre-Employment Medical Examination) with additional tests such as blood work, chest X-ray, drug and alcohol screening or specific medical questionnaires.

OmniHealth performs PEME medicals for multiple cruise operators.
We are also connected to SeaCare, which means that crew working for organisations such as Disney Cruise Line or Virgin Voyages do not need to pay in advance.
